How firms are ranked

Every city page on TaxReady lists its accounting firms in the order of one score. This page explains exactly how that score works. Firms can’t pay to move up.

Where listings come from

Each firm starts as a listing built from public business information: its name, address and location, and its Google rating and review count. Firms can claim their profile for free. They can then add a description, specialisms, accreditations and what makes them different.

Company facts

For UK firms that are limited companies or LLPs, we add a few facts from the public Companies House register: how long the firm has been registered, its company number, its registered business activity and the date of its most recent accounts. We only show these when the firm’s name and postcode both match the register exactly, and only for active companies. We never publish details about individual directors.

The score

A firm’s base score combines how many Google reviews it has with its average rating:

base score = log(1 + number of Google reviews) × Google rating

Using the logarithm of the review count means a firm with a handful of five-star reviews doesn’t leapfrog an established firm with hundreds of reviews. But each extra review still counts.

On top of that, firms that keep their TaxReady profile complete get a boost, capped at +30%:

Profile detailBoost
Profile claimed by the firm+15%
Specialisms listed+6%
Firm description written+4%
Accreditations listed+3%
Differentiators listed+2%

The boost multiplies the base score, so it can lift a well-reviewed firm but it can’t make up for having no reviews at all.

What the labels on a profile mean

AI matching

When you use Find my accountant (US version), TaxReady matches your location and needs against the same profile information, including the specialisms firms list. Firms with complete profiles are easier to match.

TaxReady is a directory and matching service. Nothing on the site is financial or tax advice, and a firm’s position in a list is not a recommendation for your particular situation.
